NITRILE

Nitrile, also known as Buna-N, acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, and NBR, is a synthetic rubber copolymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene. The physical and chemical properties vary depending on the polymer’s composition. This form of synthetic rubber is generally resistant to oil, fuel, and other chemicals. Typically used in the automotive and aeronautical industry to generate fuel and oil handling hoses, seals, gaskets and grommets. It has the ability to tolerate a range of temperatures from 40° to 226 °F makes it an ideal material for operations requiring a variety of temperatures. Nitrile rubber is normally resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons. Nitrile, like natural rubber, can be attacked by ozone, ketones, esters and aldehydes.

While the primary benefit of nitrile rubber is its strong opposition to oil and gas, but it also possesses many other useful properties:

  • Outstanding abrasion resistance
  • Excellent tear resistance
  • Set to low compression
